The Beginning of Creation
Introduction
Welcome to “Truth Unscrolled,” where ancient narratives are brought to life with modern application. This blog is envisioned as a community where we can talk like we’re sitting in one another’s living room or across the table at IHOP (sounds so good right now, doesn’t it?).
We’re going to dive into the most compelling stories of the Bible, as well as some that are often overlooked, exploring their historical, cultural, and theological contexts through discussions. This series, “Genesis: The Origins of Everything,” will explore the profound narratives of the book of Genesis, starting with the very beginning of creation.
For this discussion we’re going to talk about:
- The fascinating discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope.
- The doctrine of “creatio ex nihilo” or creation out of nothing.
- The structured six-day creation process and its significance.
James Webb Telescope Discoveries
Imagine peering into the deepest corners of the universe, seeing galaxies that formed billions of years ago, and uncovering the mysteries of distant stars and planets. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launched in 2021, has been providing us with such images and amazing discoveries, reshaping our understanding of the cosmos.

Oh, the exoplanets! The JWST is out there playing cosmic detective, delving into the atmospheres of distant worlds, searching for signs of habitability or perhaps even alien life. Imagine entire planets with unseen landscapes and endless possibilities. Alf, should you be tuning in, there’s a cat conundrum awaiting your expertise!

The James Webb Space Telescope is our cosmic DeLorean, zooming us back to the universe’s baby pictures. It’s like your wise aunt or uncle, attempting to answer the comet-sized question mark about the stars. And while we’re busy ogling over these space-age revelations, let’s not forget the original tale of the start of it all, the book of Genesis.
The Doctrine of Creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The principle of “creatio ex nihilo,” which means creation from nothing, highlights the Sovereignty of God. Through His Word, the Logos, He commanded, and it was so. Every act of creation occurred at His behest. God is BIG!

The structured six-day creation process in Genesis 1 showcases the order and goodness of God’s creation. Each day, God declares His creation “good,” culminating in the creation of humanity, which He declares “very good.” Humans are made in the image of God—Imago Dei—signifying our unique status and purpose. Genesis 1:26-27 says, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky.”

Can you recall those childhood nights spent sprawled out on the grass, gazing at the stars, imagining the possibilities of the universe? That immense cosmic expanse was both mind-boggling and oddly reassuring, hinting at a grand design. Genesis taps into that awe, reminding us that what took place to start all of this was no random accident.
Take a moment to reflect on the profound significance of being made in the image of a loving Creator. How does this divine connection shape your view of yourself and others? We would love to hear your thoughts, so please share them in a comment.
The JWST is impressive, indeed. It brings insights into a vast mystery. However, the Word that formed this universe isn’t just impressive. He’s transformative. The discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope illuminate the vastness of the universe, while the Genesis creation narrative reveals the beginning of all things by a loving God.
